IGNITION

YOUNG ENGINEERS

with Villa Maria College

WHAT IS IT?

Ignition Young Engineers aims to introduce students to designing, creating, and controlling like an engineer. In Term 3, Ignition Young Engineers is coming to Villa Maria College and is open to all year levels.

Fill in our form below and we'll keep you updated!

How does it work?

Students will meet once per week with the programme lead, Tom Maslin, at Villa Maria College. Students will be assigned to one of three classes; Mondays after school, Tuesdays after school, or Thursday before school.

Students will learn the basics of 3D Computer Aided Design on their own laptops with free industry standard software, so they’ll be able to take their skills home. Students have full access to Ignition Tutoring’s own 3D printers, as well as access to printers from VMC and the University of Canterbury. We’ll teach you how to build robots too; You’ll learn to create your own electronic circuits and code in real programming languages, no drag-and-drop!

It’s very hands on, so every week you will design, create, or code something. You’ll design and build things from basic Lego bricks through to robotic arms and self-driving cars.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

The cost is $165 per student per term. This fee is put towards the equipment used in the sessions, as well as the creation and running of the programme by a professional engineer. This fee is payable directly to Ignition Tutoring Ltd. and is not paid through school accounts.

WHO IS IT?

Tom Maslin is a Mechatronics Engineer who designed this programme with Ignition Tutoring and piloted it with Saint Bede’s College in 2019. Tom completed a Bachelor of Engineering (with Honours) at the University of Canterbury, and has worked on projects involving large industrial robotics, computer vision in healthcare, and machine learning in healthcare.
